How Will You Be Remembered?

By Unknown Artist
About a hundred years ago, a man looked at the morning newspaper and to his surprise and horror, read his name in the obituary column. The newspapers had reported the death of the wrong person by mistake. His first response was shock. Am I here or there? When he regained his composure, his second thought was to find out what people had said about him. The obituary read, “Dynamite King Dies.” And also “He was the merchant of death.” This man was the inventor of dynamite and when he read the words “merchant of death,” he asked himself a question, “Is this how I am going to be remembered?” He got in touch with his feelings and decided that this was not the way he wanted to be remembered. From that day on, he started working toward peace. His name was Alfred Nobel and he is remembered today by the great Nobel Prize.
Just as Alfred Nobel got in touch with his feelings and redefined his values,
We should step back and do the same.
What is your legacy?
How would you like to be remembered?
Will you be spoken well of?
Will you be remembered with love and respect?
Will you be missed?

Changing Identity in Literature

So I would like to tie in literature to the ability for one person to change their identity. Many times in books, poems, music, short stories, movies, and other types of art, the character changes most, if not all, of their identity. For example, in the book series Divergent by Veronica Roth, the main character, Beatrice Prior, changes her identity so much, she even changes her name to Tris, so she can start fresh with a new name and identity. In the beginning of the series, she is a shy girl who wants nothing more than to be able to blend in and follow orders. By the end of the series, Tris becomes independent, wanting to stand out and be a leader. She wants to be brave, kind, smart, and everything in between. Also in this series, another character goes through major changes in identity. Tobias, also known as Four, started out in the faction Abnegation, the faction of selflessness. As a child in this faction, he lived with his abusive father. Tobias constantly lived in fear, until the day he got to choose his faction. He chose Dauntless, the faction of the brave, where they believe in standing up for those who can not stand up for themselves. As Tobias makes his transition to Four, he becomes a fearless leader, only having four fears. He stands up for those who need it, and fights for those who he loves, no matter what the cost, even if that means his life.

What other books have you read where a character went through many changes? Why do you think they changed?
Was changing a conscious effort?
Has you or someone you know went through a major change? Why did this change occur?
Do you want to change who you are? What are your fears against changing?

Solution

The solution to the question "Who are we and can we change?" can be found by surveys, people's stories of change, and online research. The solution to the problem is to use this social experiment to sway people to realize that everyone deserves a fresh chance without judgement for past actions. I want others to accept people with open minds, and give those people a chance to make past actions right.

IDENTITY: Who Are We?

Focus Question:
What part of us makes us "us"? Can we change who we are completely?

Importance:
Many times people are judged by their past actions, automatically labeled as a certain person based on past actions, even when the person that they are is completely different then and especially now. Although people say that they accept the new person as they are, they treat that person based on past actions.

Goal:
Allow people to see that it is possible to change who you were with little to no ties to who they were before. I hope that this project will open peoples eyes and allow their minds to accept others more with open minds and allow them to be who they want to be without judgement or repercussions. I would like for people to be able to start out fresh, and not constantly shadowed by past actions that they regret.
